What is Diwali?

Diwali is the festival of lights, it one of the most significant festivals in India. The theme of Diwali is the triumph lightness over darkness and good over evil. The festival is celebrated over five days by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains over the world. The celebration features Indian sweets such as Kheer, Gulab Jamun, Gujia, Samosa, Pakora and Aloo tikki. During the festival houses are normally cleaned and often renovated, it is also tradition for new clothes to be worn. The day of Diwali is celebrated on the third day of the festival, which falls on the 29th of October this year.

2. Diwali Indian Festival

Date: Mon, 14 Oct, 11:00 am – 10:00 pm

Location: Federation Square

Host: Celebrate India

Tickets: Free

Celebrate India invites you to join the most awaited annual event of Diwali at Fed Square. Enjoy and experience the traditional and contemporary cultural feast of India through the soul stirring music, the beats of the drums, the theatre and the drama of Indian cinema, breathtaking classical, folk and Bollywood dance performances, dance and craft workshops, Henna painting, Bazaar and the authentic Indian street food. Fireworks and hundreds of glittering lamps will also light up the Square. Meet and greet AFL players and be part of many fun-filled activities throughout the day. There will also be a 10 day long exhibition called ‘Colour and Costumes of Diwali’ taking place in the Fracture Gallery. If you’re a Bollywood fan, come to the Square for free screenings on Fed TV on the 10th, 12th and 13th October from 5:30pm.
